&lt;p&gt;Express Contract Drying Ltd. (ECD) is gaining from Lanemark technology on a series of drying facilities that need to achieve results which not only meet accepted industry standards, but that also help to maintain ECD&amp;rsquo;s leading reputation in the industry &amp;ndash; the company is the largest toll sprayer in the UK.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Nick Ball, Operations Director at ECD&amp;rsquo;s Ebbw Vale facility, one of two operated by the company in the area, explains the key role played by the Lanemark installations.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;ldquo;We have built a leading reputation over 35 years for the supply of dried food flavourings and colourings, mostly for the UK snack sector,&amp;rdquo; he says. &amp;ldquo;This is centred on five process lines which handle a combination of water, a carrier such as potato starch and the added flavour, all of which are blended into an emulsion that is then transferred to one of the processing vessels.&amp;nbsp; Here, the action of the heat created by the Lanemark burner evaporates the water from the mixture to leave a powdered flavour that is then moved forward for packaging and despatch,&amp;rdquo; he said.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;ldquo;The installations at the ECD site feature our duct burner &amp;ndash; or DB &amp;ndash; design,&amp;rdquo; added Adrian Cadman, Process Burners Sales Manager at Lanemark Combustion Engineering.&amp;nbsp; &amp;ldquo;Each is fitted to a mounting plate that is bolted into the process air duct, acting as a transition box, with a fan then driving the heated air through connected ducting to the point where the emulsion is sprayed into the process.&amp;rdquo;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Importantly, the designs, which also incorporate a panel, booster and exhaust fan, ensure there is no direct flame impingement on the product itself.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Lanemark have installations on all five vessels, all include the process air fan, a modulating gas valve train, control box and elements of the stainless-steel ducting.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;ldquo;It is also vital that we are able to closely control the heated air temperature to reflect variations such as volume, and type of emulsion involved,&amp;rdquo; adds Nick Ball.&amp;nbsp; &amp;ldquo;Each installation can deliver a required temperature level of, typically, between 180&amp;deg;C and 200&amp;deg;C, with excellent heat up and temperature stability characteristics.&amp;rdquo;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The company also benefits from Lanemark&amp;rsquo;s BurnerCare service support package which includes a planned servicing programme that helps to ensure continuous plant operation.&lt;/p&gt;

Whatever your feelings towards beer, there&#039;s no getting away from the fact that brewing is a complex labour of love that rewards mastery but has a&amp;nbsp; habit of throwing a few nasty surprises your way.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;As any experienced brewer will tell you, a good beer starts with the right ingredients. Choice malts, aromatic hops and clean, soft water and you&#039;re already halfway to a pint of heaven. But after the source materials, the next most important factor must surely be the equipment used. Conditioning tanks to get the beer bottle-ready, chillers to prepare the liquor for fermentation, mash tuns to boil up a rich wort. But the key to starting off the process? A heat source - and in our case, a burner.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;How Does a Burner Affect Beer Brewing?&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;If you&#039;re in the business of making beer, then 1) thank you for your services to humanity and 2) you&#039;ll know how thermal management is often the key to unlocking the best from your finely tuned process.&lt;/p&gt;

      <description><![CDATA[&lt;h2&gt;What is obsolescence in gas burners?&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In the world of engineering, something becomes obsolete when part - or all - of the system in question is no longer manufactured, available to buy or supported by the original producer. Obsolete equipment doesn&#039;t inherently mean &#039;worse&#039;, or &#039;faulty&#039;, but using a system with one or more obsolete components could cause issues later down the line if left addressed.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Why do process heating burners become obsolete?&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Obsolescence doesn&#039;t just happen of its own accord. There are many reasons why it might come about; some gradual and some more sudden. Here&#039;s a selection of factors and circumstances that can contribute to making a burner obsolete.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h3&gt;Design and technology updates&lt;/h3&gt;
&lt;p&gt;While many principles of combustion heating stay the same, technology moves forward relentlessly. It could be for efficiency savings, performance improvements, more advanced features or better controls, but new designs, prototypes and products are always entering the market.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Continuity in design can be useful - indeed, essential - in some areas, but there are limitations and at points a manufacturer will just have to leave part of a previous burner in the past. It&#039;s at this stage that your own burner might start to lag behind and carry some level of obsolescence.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h3&gt;Component changes&lt;/h3&gt;
&lt;p&gt;As manufacturers revise their &lt;a href=&quot;https://www.lanemark.com/blog/planning-and-assembly-bringing-a-burner-to-life/&quot;&gt;burner designs&lt;/a&gt;, or release entirely new products, the chances of component obsolescence grows steadily. This could include several sections of the burner and be caused by a number of factors, but the result is that spares, replacements and compatible parts become harder to find, more expensive and, ultimately, non-existent.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;As an example, when we updated our &lt;a href=&quot;https://www.lanemark.com/burners/fdga/&quot;&gt;FD series&lt;/a&gt; from a Mark II to Mark III, we were able to increase power output by a not-insignificant amount. Great news all-round, except it unavoidably meant that components in the new model were incompatible with the older Marks I and II, rendering them obsolete.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h3&gt;Laws and regulations&lt;/h3&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Owing to the nature of our industry, providers of process heating solutions are always tasked with meeting a stringent set of legal parameters. As these laws evolve and change, so do the benchmarks we have to meet - everything from carbon emissions and hazardous materials to safety protocols.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Whenever these changes come into effect, which can cover domestic or export market laws, manufacturers are obliged to carry out updates to designs to ensure they comply fully. This could mean smaller scale component changes over time, or in severe cases render an entire system redundant overnight, but the lasting effect could well be an obsolete burner.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Which parts of a burner become obsolete?&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Several areas or specific parts of a combustion burner might move into obsolescence:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Gas train:&lt;/strong&gt; this crucial section of the burner has a series of parts that could become obsolete, including gas valves, regulators, mod ball valves, and mod motors. Or, in certain cases, the entire train itself.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Control panel: &lt;/strong&gt;&amp;nbsp;an inherently complex stage of the burner containing many small components such as relays, burner controllers, ignition transformers, temperature controllers and air pressure switches.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Burner itself:&lt;/strong&gt; At times, there could be larger elements of the burner that experience obsolescence, like electrodes, fans, wind boxes, and burner heads. Solenoid valves and control motors are also common culprits.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;How to tell if your combustion burner is at risk of being obsolete&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It&#039;s hard to predict precisely&amp;nbsp;&lt;em&gt;when&lt;/em&gt; your burner, or part of your burner, is going to become obsolete, but there are certainly signs to look out for.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ol&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Age&lt;/strong&gt;. If your process heating solution is over, say, 15 years old then it might be getting to the point where obsolescence is a risk.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Parts availability&lt;/strong&gt;. If you haven&#039;t changed a single component in that time and then find it hard to track down the necessary spares, time may not be on your burner&#039;s side.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Manufacturer status&lt;/strong&gt;. If the original manufacturer is no longer in business then your combustion burner will almost certainly be obsolete - unless another specialist company has since entered the picture to fulfil that precise need.       <description><![CDATA[&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Lanemark&#039;s customer and plastic specialist&amp;rsquo;s Romold is benefiting from the latest process of gas heating thanks to the engineering firm.&amp;nbsp; Rotational moulding operations are undertaken by the Livingston-based company feature a Lanemark FDGA forced draught burner system which is delivering clear benefits in terms of both improved operations and greater energy efficiency.&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style=&quot;font-weight: 400;&quot;&gt;Maximising energy efficiency and reducing emissions is the prime targets of any process heating application, in which the FDGA forced draught burner system achieves. One of the ways in which this application reduces emissions whilst optimising efficiency is through heat released directly to the airflow. All of the available energy is delivered to the process.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style=&quot;font-weight: 400;&quot;&gt;Talking about their latest installation at Romold, Lanemark Sales Manager, Adrian Cadman said: &amp;nbsp; &amp;ldquo;Over time, the company&amp;rsquo;s&amp;nbsp; gas burner had reduced inefficiency and, indeed, some of the spares and consumables it can need had, effectively, become obsolete &amp;ndash; so the gains that could be achieved by the new installation were clear cut.&amp;rdquo;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style=&quot;font-weight: 400;&quot;&gt;A Lanemark FD30GAN-3 burner, rated at 1,320 kW, together with a combustion air fan inlet filter, control system and associated pipework upgrade are all now operational at the site.&amp;nbsp; The improvement in efficiency was evident from day one, according to the company&amp;rsquo;s Production Planning Manager, Michael Adams &amp;ndash;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style=&quot;font-weight: 400;&quot;&gt;&amp;ldquo;Significantly, the design of the FDGA burner features an electronic variable speed drive which receives temperature control signals from the system temperature controller, interfacing them directly with the combustion air fan motor,&amp;rdquo; explains Adrian Cadman.&amp;nbsp; &amp;ldquo;When the required process operating temperature has been reached a control signal is sent to the burner controls and the combustion air fan speed slows down reducing the air pressure that it generates.&amp;nbsp; This is then transmitted to the latest generation gas/air modulating control valves so that the gas flow is reduced proportionally.&amp;rdquo;&amp;nbsp; He adds that this not only helps to maximise efficiency but also eradicates the need for mechanical linkages which can be prone to slippage or wear and tear.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
